The Unglamorous Work That Decides Whether You Can Trust an AI Answer
We read every Tanium Atlas release note. Since Atlas reached general availability in June, one theme has come up more consistently than any headline feature.
Grounding. The work of making sure an AI’s answer actually reflects the data it retrieved.
This isn’t a feature you demo. Nobody puts “improved behavior when a query returns nothing” on a slide. But it’s the layer that determines whether you can act on what Atlas tells you, or whether you need to second-guess every response.
Almost every Atlas release this summer has included grounding work. Better behavior when a query returns empty. More accurate counts when a large fleet result hits a cap. Clearer answers when an endpoint is offline and the data genuinely isn’t reachable. These are the edge cases where AI systems are most likely to confidently give you something wrong.
Individual modules are contributing too. The August Tanium Performance release improved the metadata describing its own Sensors and API routes so Atlas can choose among them more accurately. This matters because Atlas can only be as precise as what each module publishes about itself. If a module’s self-description is vague, Atlas guesses. When the description improves, Atlas gets sharper without a single line of Atlas code changing.
None of this makes a launch announcement. All of it decides whether you can act on what you’re told.
Atlas can surface its sources. When you can see the underlying query, verification takes seconds instead of requiring you to rebuild the logic yourself. Make this a default practice, not something you do only when an answer feels off.
When Atlas summarizes a result across thousands of endpoints, compare the number against the underlying Tanium Console question. If the fleet result hit a cap, Atlas may be working with a subset. The answer could still be directionally correct and numerically off.
Offline endpoints and partially specified hostnames are where any real-time system has the least to work with. Atlas is getting better here with every release, but these remain the scenarios where a confident-sounding answer deserves the most scrutiny.
Steady, specific improvements in grounding are a sign of a maturing product. The teams shipping these fixes are finding real edge cases and closing them one at a time. That’s exactly what you want from a system you’re asking questions about your own live environment.
The alternative, shipping headline features without doing this work, is how AI tools earn distrust. Tanium is visibly investing in the opposite direction.
